Year 4

Introducing the Year 4 Team:

  • Miss Adcock - Class Teacher
  • Mrs Bland - Learning Support Assistant
  • Miss Kent - 1:1 Learning Support Assistant

  • Mrs Bath - Class Teacher
  • Miss Tompkins - Learning Support Assistant
  • Miss Forrest - 1:1 Learning Support Assistant

This term during our History lessons, we will be focusing on the ‘Romans’. During this unit of work, the children will be learning all about significant events and key people in Roman history. They will discover all the ways the Romans have influenced Britain to this day. The children will also learn about this topic through their other subjects including English, Art, Design and Technology and Science.

In our English lessons, we will be looking at the traditional tale ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ with a focus on building confidence in their own personal writing styles and using effective descriptions. All writing has a purpose and we will be looking at, ‘Writing to Entertain’ and ‘Writing to Inform’.

In Maths, the children will start the term by looking at time and statistics then we will be moving onto Roman numerals. We will then be recapping number and place value before revisiting the four main operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and their various written methods. We will also be continuing our ‘Multiplication Marathons’. Children have three minutes to answer their questions and have to achieve full marks to be able to move on to the next mile! These weekly tests will support your child’s multiplication knowledge and general mental maths.

The children are expected to read every day and they will also be given a spelling rule to learn each week. Reading each day does not have to mean finishing an entire book; a few pages will do. Please remember to log in your child’s school diary if you need to keep the book or get a new one. You will also be able to find a homework grid on our website, which outlines six homework suggestions, in line with what we are learning about at school. The homework is optional; however it is a great way for you to get involved in your child’s learning and to complete them together, as a family. We would also love to see photos of you completing your efforts; these photos can be emailed into the school office. Please make sure you put your child’s name and class in the subject line. Please make sure your child has their home school diary in school every day.

PE & Swimming

4LA will have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

4JB will have Swimming on Mondays and PE on Tuesdays.

On the days your child has PE, please send your child to school wearing their new PE uniform. Most of these lessons will take place outside so please ensure that your child wears the appropriate clothing.

On the Mondays your child has swimming, please send your child with their swimming kit, in their swimming bag (all name labelled). This need to consist of: - a swimming costume (no bikinis) for girls and swimming trunks for boys, a swimming hat and a towel. Children will not require goggles.

Forest School

The children in Year 4 will continue their Forest School sessions later this year (specific details/dates will be communicated nearer the time). The children will need to bring a change of appropriate clothing in a named bag each week for Forest School.

If there is anything else you would like to discuss with your child’s class teacher they will be happy to make a telephone appointment with you.

Incidentally, to help you to keep informed throughout the year, this and further newsletters will be uploaded to the school website:

All of the staff are looking forward to working with you and your children over the rest of the year. Thank you for your continued support.
