Introducing the Year 2 Team:
2GM - Mrs Kavanagh – Class Teacher, Mrs Lane – LSA and Mrs Mackey – 1:1 LSA
2SH - Miss Hurley – Class Teacher and Mrs Nallasamy – LSA
This term our Year 2 theme is ‘British Legends and Monsters’. During this topic the children will be learning all about the myths and lessons that have become so famous in British culture today. From the Loch Ness Monster to Robin Hood and his Merry Men, the children will be learning all about the geography of the British Isles in a fun and creative way.
The children will also learn about this theme through their other subjects including English, Art and Design and Technology.
In Science, our two spring term topics will be ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ and ‘Animals, including Humans’. We have a big focus on ‘Working Scientifically’ in our Science lessons and the children will have the opportunity to get hands on and lead their learning through a variety of experiences. We are also very fortunate to be visiting College Lake nature reserve in Tring to further the children’s knowledge of a variety of animals and their various habitats.
Across the year in our writing, we will be spending four weeks on particular text types to really build our confidence with them. All writing has a purpose and we will be looking at ‘Writing to Entertain’ and ‘Writing to Inform’. In Maths, the children will start the term by looking at number and place value before moving onto addition and subtraction and developing their methods for these operations; as well as looking at division and multiplication. We will also be continuing our ‘Multiplication Marathons’. Each week the children will bring home a new set of multiplication and division questions to learn for their weekly ‘mile’ test. Children have three minutes to answer their questions and have to achieve full marks to be able to move on to the next mile! These weekly tests will support your child’s multiplication knowledge and general mental maths but are not something that needed to be fretted over. We simply want to increase your child’s fluency and confidence in this area.
The children are expected to read every day and they will also be given a spelling rule to learn each week. Reading each day does not have to mean finishing an entire book; a few pages will do. Please remember to log in your child’s school diary if you need to keep the book or get a new one. You will also be able to find a homework grid on our website, which outlines six homework suggestions, in line with what we are learning about at school. The homework is optional; however is a great way for you to get involved in your child’s learning and to complete them together, as a family. The homework will be celebrated in a class show and tell session and may even make it onto our classroom displays! We would also love to see photos of you completing your efforts; these photos can be emailed into the school office.
Please make sure your child has their home school diary in school every day.
Year 2 will have PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The children need to have their PE kit in school every day during term time and it will be sent home with the children at the end of each half term.
The children have one PE lesson with their class teacher and the other lesson with Mrs Westcott and Mr Andrews. Some of these lessons will take place outside so please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothing in school at all times, especially during the colder winter months.
The children need to have a named Haydon Abbey PE T-shirt and black shorts for inside. As the weather becomes colder the children need to bring in warmer clothes for PE outside. They need to have a pair of trainers in school and they can bring in black or navy tracksuit bottoms and a black or navy jumper. Please remember to give your child an extra pair of socks if they are wearing tights that day.
If there is anything else you would like to discuss with your child’s class teacher they will be happy to make an appointment with you.
To help you to keep informed throughout the year, this and further newsletters will be uploaded to the school website. If however you struggle to access information online then please do let us know. A small amount of paper letters will be available from the school office. Please also check the website weekly for Year 2’s homelinks which will outline what the children will be learning in class that coming week. Some important messages may also be relayed in the homelinks so please do ensure you check them regularly.
All of the staff in Year 2 are looking forward to working with you and your children over the next term.
