Maths at Haydon Abbey

At Haydon Abbey we strive to ensure all children are equipped with a secure mathematical understanding to support their progress throughout each phase and into the world beyond. Thus, throughout their learning, children recall, recap and deepen their understanding of number and place value, mental and written calculation, fractions, shape, space and measure and statistics alongside skills specific to individual year groups. Each element develops a mathematical awareness essential
for adult life and all skills will be applied to real-life contexts. As mathematicians, our children are taught to become problem solvers, team players and independent thinkers. They learn to recognise the importance of challenge and are actively encouraged to extend their thinking, developing resilience when approaching new and difficult skills.

Maths is a central component of the teaching day and all children explore, use and work with mathematical concepts every day. Each teacher and year group follows the Haydon Abbey Medium Term Plan, a hybrid version of the wider White Rose scheme. The Medium Term Plan has been adapted to support the needs of our children; blocks are split into smaller chunks so that mathematical strands can be revisited and extended over the course of a year. This creates more opportunities for
our children to recap prior learning and recall knowledge essential for the next step. Weekly and daily plans are then developed from the White Rose Scheme of Learning, using the small step sequence. Pre-School uses the White Rose Scheme of Learning. However, within Reception, Maths is taught during Mastering Number four times per week; the fifth day explores ‘Shape, Space and Measure’ from the White Rose Scheme. It is taught daily through a short adult-led input and then skills are practised through play. Maths is integrated through all areas of the environment and is embedded into daily routines. These core curriculum lessons are planned and taught daily, each lasting a minimum of 1 hour (Year 1- Year 6).

Voice 21 and our WalkThrus focuses (Cold-Calling and Think-Pair-Share) have been integrated successfully into daily Maths planning. Children now have greater opportunity to think more deeply and discuss mathematics.

Maths Ethos
The NCETM 5 big ideas continue to shape and direct teaching and CPD as we continue to work towards becoming a Mastery school. ECTs attend training from the NCETM throughout their early career and Maths Leads work in partnership with the NCETM during workgroups and courses.

With the exception of Reception, the maths medium term plan has been adapted from the White Rose overview to meet the needs of our children at Haydon Abbey. White Rose Blocks have been divided across a year to create additional opportunities for recap and recall. Teachers can use White Rose resources but are encouraged to create their own slide deck, following the school-based proforma, which prioritises modelling. Questions and examples can be taken from White Rose but teachers may also choose to select alternative appropriate, high-quality resources to embed learning.
