Writing at Haydon Abbey

Writing at Haydon Abbey School and Pre-School

At Haydon Abbey we strive to ensure that every child is equipped with the skills needed to write with fluency and purpose. Writing is the combination of a range of complex skills and we recognise the importance of teaching these skills effectively across the school.

From an initial focus on fine motor skills, phonics and letter formation through to composing texts which showcase a range of writing skills, across the school our children are taught about the art of writing every day.

We believe that to be a successful writer, you need to have something to write about, and this ethos is supported by our writing curriculum which follows a Talk for Writing structure. Key texts are learnt orally in the initial stage of a writing cycle and children are taught to mimic successful writing structures in their own work while using the skills they have been taught to develop their own pieces.
