This term our theme is ‘Back to the Future’. During this topic the children will be learning about inventions and inventors. They will travel back through time to look at inventions from different time periods and how they have developed. They will also be looking at the significant inventions in history which have changed the way we live today and will think about ‘Britain’s greatest invention’.
The children will also learn about this theme through their other subjects including Art, Design and Technology and Science.
Across Year 3 and 4 in our writing, we will be practising our sentence stacking skills. Please keep an eye on the class boards to read our stories each week. In Maths, the children will start the term by looking at number and place value before moving onto the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
The children are expected to read every day and they will be given a spelling rule to learn each week. They will also be given a homework grid with a variety of activities relating to their learning. The children are asked to try to complete one of these activities every two weeks and this can be recorded in their homework books or however they wish to present it (photos, art work etc).
The children will also be given times tables to practise at home in preparation for their ‘Multiplication Marathon’ tests each week. By completing these, the children improve their mental maths skills.
Please make sure your child has their home school diary in school every day.
Year 3 will have PE on Monday and Friday
Year 4 will have NO longer have swimming, therefore will do PE on Monday and on Thursday
The children need to have their PE kit in school every day during term time and it will be sent home with the children at the end of each half term. The children need to have a named Haydon Abbey PE T-shirt and black shorts for inside. As the weather becomes colder the children need to bring in warmer clothes for PE outside. They need to have a pair of trainers in school and they can bring in black or navy tracksuit bottoms and a black or navy jumper. Please remember to give your child an extra pair of socks if they are wearing tights that day.
The children in year 3 have one PE lesson with their class teacher and the other lesson with Mrs Westcott, PE teacher. Year 4 will now have one PE lesson with their class teacher and the other lesson with Mrs Westcott. Due to the building work at school most of the PE sessions will take place outside so please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothing in school at all times.
The children in Year 3 and 4 will continue their Forest School sessions this year. Year 4 will be having theirs this term on a Thursday afternoon and doing alternate weeks starting with 4SW on Thursday 19 April, however each Year 4 class need their forest school kit in school each week just in case they need to swap classes around.
The children will need to bring a change of appropriate clothing in a named bag each week for Forest School. We always need parent volunteers for Forest School so that the sessions can continue so if you can help please speak to your child’s class teacher.
If there is anything else you would like to discuss with your child’s class teacher they will be happy to make an appointment with you.
All of the staff have enjoyed working with you and your children over the past two terms. Thank you for your continued support throughout the year.
