This half term our Key Stage One theme is ‘Around the World in 80 Bricks’. During this topic the children will be learning about the 7 continents and 5 oceans that make up our wonderful world. We will begin our topic with a Wow Day at Legoland where the children will take part in workshops. During the day the children will get to explore, locate and identify the Earths Continents and Oceans through LEGO. Use team work and building skills to create famous landmarks, animals and buildings which are then assembled onto a LEGO map. The children will then use what they have learnt on their trip to create globes, label the continents and identify human and physical geography on the different continents.
The children will also learn about this theme through their other subjects including Art, Design and Technology and Science.
Across the key stage in our writing, we will be practising our KS1 skills. Please keep an eye on our Home Links each week (Homework tab) to discover how to support your child’s learning at home. In Maths, the children will start the term by looking at number and place value before moving onto addition and subtraction and developing their methods for these operations, as well as looking at division and multiplication.
The children are expected to read every day and they will be given a spelling rule to learn each week. They will also be given discussion homework which will be related to their learning for the following week. The children may be asked to have a discussion with you and complete some research. We shall also be introducing our Family Challenge to KS1. This is an activity that you complete at home as a family and then bring into show us at school. We would also love to see photos of you completing your Family Challenges; these photos can be emailed into the school office. Our Family Challenges will usually be set each half term.
Year 2 - Children in Year 2 will be given times tables to practise at home in preparation for their ‘Multiplication Marathon’ tests each week. By completing these, the children improve their mental maths skills.
Please make sure your child has their home school diary in school every day
Year 1 will have PE on Tuesday and Wednesday
Year 2 will have PE on Tuesday and Friday
The children need to have their PE kit in school every day during term time and it will be sent home with the children at the end of each half term. The children need to have a named Haydon Abbey PE T-shirt and black shorts for inside. As the weather becomes colder the children need to bring in warmer clothes for PE outside. They need to have a pair of trainers in school and they can bring in black or navy tracksuit bottoms and a black or navy jumper. Please remember to give your child an extra pair of socks if they are wearing tights that day.
The children have one PE lesson with their class teacher and the other lesson with Mrs Westcott, PE teacher. Some of these lessons will take place outside so please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothing in school at all times.
The children in Key Stage One will continue to have Forest School sessions in school this year. Class 2VC will be doing it every Wednesday afternoon until the May half term.
The children will need to bring a change of appropriate clothing in a named bag each week. We always need parent volunteers for Forest School so that the sessions can continue so if you can help please speak to your child’s class teacher.
If there is anything else you would like to discuss with your child’s class teacher they will be happy to make an appointment with you.
All of the staff in Key Stage One have enjoyed working with you and your children over the last two terms.
