This term our Year 2 theme is ‘Wild Weather. This topic will have a geography focus and we will be exploring different types of weather across the continents. It is hard to imagine some of the extreme weather that other countries experience, so through this topic, we will be learning how and why these weather types occur and how people prepare and deal with the consequences.
The children will also learn about this theme through their other subjects including English, Art and Design and Technology.
In Science this term, we will be learning all ‘Living Things and their Habitats’. Our homework grid has given you some ideas of habitats on our door step that would be great for you to visit! As part of this topic, during our second half term, we will be visiting College Lake Nature Reserve in Tring. Haydon Abbey have visited this site for a trip in previous years and the children have always had a fantastic day out! More details to follow soon.
Across the year in our English writing, we will be spending four weeks on particular text types to really build our confidence with them. All writing has a purpose and we will be looking at ‘Writing to Entertain’ and ‘Writing to Inform’. We have found that the children are becoming so much more confident and creative in their writing and we have been very impressed with their work last term.
In Maths, the children will start the term by re-visiting number and place value before moving onto addition and subtraction and developing their methods for these operations, as well as looking at division and multiplication. Preparations for the children’s SATs assessment will continue to take place, with regular opportunities to immerse themselves in practice papers. If you have any questions regarding the assessment, then you may find this document and video useful: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/key-stage-1-and-2-national-curriculum-tests-information-for-parents You can of course meet with any of us to discuss any concerns that you may have. All the additional maths support that you offer your children at home is greatly beneficial and appreciated by us.
We will also be continuing our ‘Multiplication Marathons’. Each week the children will bring home a new set of multiplication and division questions to learn for their weekly ‘mile’ test. Children have three minutes to answer their questions and have to achieve full marks to be able to move on to the next mile! These weekly tests will support your child’s multiplication knowledge and general mental maths.
I am excited to announce that the children in Years 2 and 3 will be treading the boards in March and will be putting on their very own production of Mary Poppins! The performance times are yet to be confirmed but please pop either Monday 18th or Wednesday 20th March into your diaries. If you have the opportunity, please share the film or book, Mary Poppins with your child to get them familiar with the story and songs. A trip to the cinema to see Mary Poppins Returns may also be a fun family activity! Further production details to follow…
The children are expected to read every day and they will be given a spelling rule to learn each week. Reading each day does not have to mean finishing an entire book; a few pages will do. Please remember to log in your child’s school diary if you need to keep the book or get a new one. You will also be able to find a homework grid on our website, which outlines six homework suggestions, in line with what we are learning about at school. The homework is optional; however is a great way for you to get involved in your child’s learning and to complete them together, as a family. The homework will be celebrated in a class show and tell session and may even make it onto our classroom displays! We would also love to see photos of you completing your efforts; these photos can be emailed into the school office.
Year 2 will have PE on Thursdays and Fridays.
The children need to have their PE kit in school every day during term time and it will be sent home with the children at the end of each half term.
The children have one PE lesson with their class teacher and the other lesson with Mrs Westcott and Mr Andrews. Some of these lessons will take place outside so please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothing in school at all times.
The children need to have a named Haydon Abbey PE T-shirt and black shorts for inside. As the weather becomes colder the children need to bring in warmer clothes for PE outside. They need to have a pair of trainers in school and they can bring in black or navy tracksuit bottoms and a black or navy jumper. Please remember to give your child an extra pair of socks if they are wearing tights that day.
The children have now completed their Forest School sessions for the year.
If there is anything else you would like to discuss with your child’s class teacher they will be happy to make an appointment with you.
Incidentally, to help you to keep informed throughout the year, this and further newsletters will be uploaded to the school website. If however, you struggle to access information online then please do let us know. A small amount of paper letters will be available from the school office.
All of the staff in Year 2 are looking forward to continue working with you and your children over the next year.
