Haydon Abbey School and Pre-School

We plant the seeds and help them grow

Year 2

Introducing the Year 2 Team

2KT   -  Mrs Thompson - Class Teacher, Mrs Trayling - Trainee Teacher, Mrs Cooper - Senior LSA

2HW  -  Mrs Walton - Class Teacher, Mrs Parrish - LSA

2GM  -  Miss Martin - Class Teacher, Mrs Nallasamy - LSA

This term our Year 2 theme is ‘Building Britain’. During this topic the children will be learning about significant people and events that helped to form Britain today. We will be starting our theme looking at our current monarchy, before moving back in time to explore Queen Victoria and life in the Victorian times; rounding off our half term with a trip to Windsor Castle. Continuing into the second half term, we will be travelling back to 1665 and 1666 to learn all about the Great Plague and Great Fire of London. We will enjoy a drama workshop from key historical figures of this time and will be exploring how London has changed as a result of these major events.

The children will also learn about this theme through their other subjects including English, Art, Design and Technology and Science.

Across the year in our writing, we will be spending four weeks on particular text types to really build our confidence with them. All writing has a purpose and we will be looking at ‘Writing to Entertain’ and ‘Writing to Inform’. In Maths, the children will start the term by looking at number and place value before moving onto addition and subtraction and developing their methods for these operations, as well as looking at division and multiplication. We will also be starting our ‘Multiplication Marathons’. Each week the children will bring home a new set of multiplication and division questions to learn for their weekly ‘mile’ test. Children have three minutes to answer their questions and have to achieve full marks to be able to move on to the next mile! These weekly tests will support your child’s multiplication knowledge and general mental maths.

Homework

The children are expected to read every day and they will be given a spelling rule to learn each week. Reading each day does not have to mean finishing an entire book; a few pages will do. Please remember to log in your child’s school diary if you need to keep the book or get a new one. You will also be able to find a homework grid on our website, which outlines six homework suggestions, in line with what we are learning about at school. The homework is optional; however is a great way for you to get involved in your child’s learning and to complete them together, as a family. The homework will be celebrated in a class show and tell session and may even make it onto our classroom displays! We would also love to see photos of you completing your efforts; these photos can be emailed into the school office.

Please make sure your child has their home school diary in school every day.

PE

Year 2 will have PE on Thursdays and Fridays.

The children need to have their PE kit in school every day during term time and it will be sent home with the children at the end of each half term.

The children have one PE lesson with their class teacher and the other lesson with Mrs Westcott and Mr Andrews. Some of these lessons will take place outside so please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothing in school at all times.

The children need to have a named Haydon Abbey PE T-shirt and black shorts for inside. As the weather becomes colder the children need to bring in warmer clothes for PE outside. They need to have a pair of trainers in school and they can bring in black or navy tracksuit bottoms and a black or navy jumper. Please remember to give your child an extra pair of socks if they are wearing tights that day.

Forest School

Children in Year 2 will continue to have Forest School sessions in school this autumn term on a Monday afternoon. Details of which class will participate when, to follow.

The children will need to bring a change of appropriate clothing in a named bag each week. This can be taken home to be washed at the end of each session, however, please ensure that you send in clothes that you are happy to get a bit muddy! We always need parent volunteers for Forest School so that the sessions can continue so if you can help please speak to your child’s class teacher.

If there is anything else you would like to discuss with your child’s class teacher they will be happy to make an appointment with you.

Incidentally, to help you to keep informed throughout the year, this and further newsletters will be uploaded to the school website. If however, you struggle to access information online then please do let us know. A small amount of paper letters will be available from the school office.
