What is Eco Schools?

The Eco-schools programme is designed for schools to follow a simple seven-step framework that helps raise awareness of environmental issues whilst empowering young people to make a positive different by taking a lead on environmental actions and projects in their school and local community.

Eco Schools at Haydon Abbey

Each class have nominated a representative to become an ‘Eco Warrior’. These children form a committee with Miss Hurley and Mrs Wood and will meet monthly to discuss how we can become eco-friendlier in our school.

In the first meeting, the committee will carry out an ‘Environmental Review’ where they will see what 3 main areas they will focus on for the year and create an action plan. These will be from one of the ten topics Eco Schools focus on:

  • Biodiversity
  • Energy
  • Global Citizenship
  • Healthy Living
  • Litter
  • Marine
  • School grounds
  • Transport
  • Waste
  • Water

This will become a working document that the Eco Committee can adapt and evolve as opportunities (or barriers) present themselves throughout the academic year.

Within the first week of launching the initiative, we had many excited children writing letters to their teachers explaining why they should be chosen as an Eco Warrior and some children in UKS2, leading by example and becoming litter pickers around the school grounds.

Towards the end of the year, we hope to achieve our Green Eco Flag. We will continue to update this page and also through Facebook on the work that the Eco Warriors and hopefully, the whole school community are working on.

Our Eco-Warriors are:

Nathan and Aisha (Y6), Holly and Eve (Y5), Aiyla and Maya (Y4), Amelia, Julian and Ava (Y3), Rayne and Qirat (Y2), Sophie and Ezra (Y1) and Aaliya S, Jascole and Dima (YR).
