Autumn Term Review

Autumn Term – Lower KS2 (Years 3 and 4)

This term Years 3 and 4 have been super busy learning about different technologies and inventions throughout the ages. The children have enjoyed learning about technology (or lack of it!) in the past and how it has developed and shaped our lives today. They designed their own inventions and will be voting for ‘HA’s Greatest Invention’…watch this space for the nail biting results! The children’s knowledge was supported by a trip to Bletchley park when they learned about technology during the war, the development of computers and all about the amazing code breaking Enigma machine.

In their writing, the children have written their own interpretations of ‘The Iron Man’, ‘Bike Boy’ and Aladdin and have more recently been writing newspaper reports.

This term, in Year 3, the children designed, made and tested their own kites. They were brilliant and worked really well. The children were very proud of their achievements. They have also been looking at painting with watercolours and how to blend and create texture.

Year 4 have been taking part in Forest School and have been developing their outdoor skills. They have been planting trees, building dens and even toasting marshmallows on an open fire. The children have also been given the chance to independently explore the environment, climb trees and dig in the sand pit. The children have thoroughly enjoyed their time in Forest School. Year 3 will take part in similar activities in Forest School after the holidays.

Year 4 were also lucky enough to go on a residential school trip to ‘Bushcraft’. It was, quite simply, amazing. The children fully immersed themselves into life outdoors and enjoyed every second whilst there. They made their own fires and cooked the lunch they had made, made simple animal traps, learnt basic survival skills and even slept under shelters they had made themselves. They were filthy and exhausted when they were returned but it was all worth it to see the smiles on their faces!

The children have been busy practising some Christmas songs which they sang at the carol concert at the end of term. It was lovely to see so many of you there.

After the Christmas holidays the children’s new topic will be ‘From Bean to Bar’ and will look at the journey of different food items and ingredients, where things grow and why they grow there. We will be mainly focussing on the journey of the cocoa bean but will also be looking at different climates around the world, countries of origin for different food items and the distributions of goods throughout the world.

All of the staff in Phase 3 and 4 would like to thank you for your continued support throughout the term and would like to wish you a very happy Christmas, a restful holiday and we look forward to seeing you in 2018.
